Choosing your gown is probably the most important and most enjoyable decision you will be making.
I believe that choosing your gown should be the first thing you do once you have decided on the date for your wedding. Once you have chosen your gown all your other decisions will be smoother and easier as everything else is based around you and your gown. You can view it like an upside down pyramid where your gown is the point at the bottom and all other aspects of your wedding are built upon this foundation
ORDER EARLY!!!
Once you have decided upon your gown I cannot stress enough that you must order your gown early. I recommend 12 months but no less than 10 months.
From experience, there is nothing worse than not knowing whether your gown is going to arrive on time and does not facilitate a stress free journey.
As much as retailers assure you that your gown will arrive on time, they are not responsible for or in control of unexpected events such as manufacturer delays, fabric delays or even postal delays.
CHOOSING A STYLE
Going to a few different designers or retail boutiques can be like trying to find a needle in a haystack so to speak. Each individual retailer will have hundreds of designs and styles which would confuse even the most astute fashion guru!
Before you venture out into the world of boutique/designer appointments with your entourage of keen and willing wedding party delegates, take some time to sift through magazines and scroll through designers websites just trying to narrow it down a little.
We all know what our best bodily features are and we are fully aware which style of clothing suits us best eg strapless, straps, halter for instance. Well you need to apply all this knowledge, however small it may seem to finding your perfect gown.
Start by cutting out designs from magazines, or printing pictures from a website. A great idea is to create a scrap book of things you like. You can always tear them out if you discover that the style is just not you.
Ok, it's time for you to book some appointments. Book well in advance as the bridal boutiques are always very busy. Ideally I recommend only 1 appointment, maximum 2 in any one session. I know this is a bit hard as you are trying to organise suitable times for you and your entourage but you have to remember this is all about you and your gown and you want to make the right decision not a rushed decision because you have done too much trying on and all the different styles start blurring into a wash of fabric.
CHOOSING A COLOUR
Things to take into consideration when choosing your colour are your skin tone, your hair colour and your eye colour. Again use the knowledge you have already with regard to what colours sit nicely against your skin, compliment your hair colour and most importantly light up your eyes for that all important sparkle on your big day.
Although designers are still producing gowns in white and ivory there is a general trend to extend the colour spectrum and include other colours, generally in muted tones which gives you the bride a wider scope to play with if you just don't want white or ivory.
Some examples:
Diamond white: Between white and ivory
Mocha: Dark ivory, between gold and ivory
Gold: Lots of different shades, looks stunning
Cognac: Between gold and mocha
Red: For those who want to push the boat out a little
Ice: Pale blue
Blush: Pale pink
Some designers are quite happy to provide swatches if you have a vague idea of what colour you may want. Also retail boutiques will quite often have swatches available for you to borrow.
ATTENDING YOUR APPOINTMENTS
Quick tips;
Always take a couple of bras with you to gain the effect under the bridal gown.
Always take a pair of shoes that are roughly the same height heel as you are thinking of wearing.
Be mindful of what underwear you have on. If you wear a "G" string remember you and your rear will be on show quite extensively!!
